Can Dogs Attend Weddings? Venue Rules & How to Ask

Dreaming of your dog by your side as you say "I do"? Before you plan the outfit, there's one question to settle first: will your venue actually allow it? Here's how to find out — and how to ask so you get a yes.

Start with the venue's pet policy

Every venue is different. Some welcome well-behaved dogs, some allow them only for the ceremony or photos, and others don't permit animals at all (often due to insurance, allergies, or food-service rules). Before you fall in love with a plan, get the policy in writing.

Questions to ask your venue

  • Are dogs allowed on the property, and if so, which areas?
  • Can my dog be part of the ceremony, or only outdoor and photo time?
  • Is there a quiet space where my dog can rest between moments?
  • Are there breed, size, or leash requirements?
  • Do you require proof of vaccinations or extra insurance?

Getting these answers early saves you heartbreak later — and shows the venue you're a responsible pet parent.

Outdoor venues are your best friend

Gardens, barns, beaches, and parks tend to be the most dog-friendly. If you're leaning that way, our guides to barn and outdoor weddings and beach weddings with dogs are worth a read. Indoor and hotel venues are stricter, so ask extra early.

How to ask (and get a yes)

Frame it as a small, well-managed request: your dog will have a dedicated handler, stay leashed, appear only for a specific part of the day, and head home right after. A clear plan reassures venues far more than "we'd love to bring our dog."

If the answer is no

Don't lose hope — there are lovely ways to include your dog even from afar. See how to include your dog when they can't be there for ideas like custom signage, photos, and video moments. And once you get the green light, line up a plan for who watches the dog during the wedding.
